Summary: The SV3100 is self-powered, creating its own electricity from the conversion of propane to CO2.  It uses the same engine as the SV5100, but releases less gas, yet catches about the same number of mosquitoes.  It requires 1 AA battery to power ignition, but no electrical cords are needed.  It now has a new propane ignition configuration which all but eliminates ignition tube clogging that has plagued some propane traps. And the catch tray has been relocated from below to above the fan, so the insects do not hit the fan on the way in, much cleaner. It uses a newly designed plastic catch tray which is more durable than a net. It runs continuously, so it is our recommended trap for Asian Tiger mosquitoes (daytime biters found mainly in the southern US) when used with the Combo lure which contains Octenol and Lactic Acid.

A prior version of the SV3100 was tested by the USDA in 2003 against the Mosquito Magnet Liberty. It caught 10% more mosquitoes on average than the Liberty. This model is much improved over that one.

Propane is used to create CO2, moisture and heat, and to power the LED lights, all mosquito attractants.  It has an optional exterior sticky paper trap (black and white) which also catches biters.  It is compact and portable.

SV3100 DETAILS and ATTRACTANTS

HOW IT WORKS  The SV3100 lures mosquitoes into the machine by using CO2, blinking LED lights, moisture, heat, Octenol and Lactic Acid (Combo lure). As they enter the trap, a fan sucks the insects into a removable catch tray where they quickly dehydrate and die. The catch tray is now located before the fan, a very good design move.  It eliminates clogging of the fan, and makes cleaning easier.  The catch tray is removed for cleaning as needed. It also has an exterior Tac Trap, a sticky paper trap.  They come into contact with the sticky paper and cannot escape.  You can use that option or not.  It adds about 20% to the catch.  The color behind the sticky paper is black.

It requires NO electrical connection.  The startup is powered by one AA battery.  After that, it gets electricity from the process of converting propane to CO2.  We recommend the new Combo lure (in place of the one that is designed for the unit) which contains both Octenol and Lactic Acid.  Tests show it to be much more effective for most mosquitoes, particularly Asian Tigers and other hard to catch mosquito species, and midges or no-see-ums. The sticky Tac Trap must be replaced from time to time.  The manufacturer recommends at least 4 times per year or when the paper is full.

ATTRACTANTS   The SV3100 incorporates 8 known mosquito attractants, which are CO2, Octenol, Lactic Acid, LED light, movement (by light), color, heat, and moisture

OPERATION  Startup is simple.  Just open the gas tank valve at the tank, and load the Combo lure or BaitBlock Octenol.  Hold down the control valve and immediately press and hold the igniter button until you hear a POP sound indicating ignition.  It usually occurs within 30 seconds.  Continue to hold the control button down for 30 seconds. The engine gauge will move into the green zone, LED lights flicker and air will flow out the bottom of the unit.  Done.

We recommend that you turn it off in heavy rain.

TROUBLESHOOTING  If you have problems with the unit, call the support line which is open from 8am to 8pm eastern time, and during the day on the weekends.  The company prides itself on fast and competent customer support.

PLACEMENT  This is one of the most important considerations.  CO2 traps should be placed at least 35 feet from where people linger, preferably more.  It should be between you and the source of the mosquitoes in a shady area with the light side in the direction of the mosquito source.  Preferably, it is as close to the source as possible and up-wind of the mosquitoes.  You are trying to attract the mosquitoes to it before they perceive you.  Remember that CO2 can be sensed over 100 feet from the source (you and the trap) and the more people, the more CO2.  If you have more than one source or a long property line bordering on an area that harbors mosquitoes, you may need 2 or more.  Figure one for every 150 feet of perimeter. And if they come from both sides of the property, you will need at least 2.

Once you place them, monitor the catch. The mosquitoes shrivel up to almost nothing due to the drying effects of the fan, so do not expect a huge pile.  Remember that mosquitoes are more prevalent right after a rain, and then decrease in numbers until the next rain, when another hatch of the same or different species may occur.  If you are not catching many, move the machine to another location and increase the operation time.  CO2 is heavier than air, so do not place it in a depression.  The best gauge is your perception of the number of bites you get after placing the machine.  It will not kill every mosquito, but it should make your outdoor life much more tolerable and continue to reduce the population over time.

We also recommend that you add one of the Cognito or Thermacell repellent products for a complete package in any case.  The traps kill the mosquitoes and the repellents keep any that remain away from you.  If you have a large area, add more traps.

Q. Where do I get Propane?   A. Propane is available at many gas stations and hardware stores. It is very easy to find.
Q. How often do I have to refill the tank?   A. Every 19-21 days.
Q. What is the warranty period? A. Manufacturer's one year limited warranty. Customer service is available 7 days a week.
