  The Dragonfly II Mosquito Trap

To print this sheet, select Print from the File menu of your browser

Summary: The Dragonfly II is a new corded mosquito trap.  We believe it is the best mosquito trap available. In tests, it outperformed every trap.

It uses CO2 from a small, easy to handle CO2 cannister rather than propane. The entire top of the trap is heated and appears as a small animal (blood close to the surface) to the mosquitoes' infrared sensors. It also uses a Lure with (Octenol alone or with Lactic Acid) and light at night.  It has 8 different operating modes.  One light tells you which mode is operating and whether your CO2 or Lure needs replacing by flashing different colors and patterns.  It automatically senses when dawn and dusk occur. YOU MUST BUY CO2 LOCALLY. WE CANNOT SHIP IT. See Where to Get CO2 below.

Installation and operation are very easy. To operate, you repeatedly press a single button through the 8 modes until you reach the one you want (see chart below).

We recommend the Dragonfly II for all mosquitoes and biting flies (including midges). If you have Asian Tiger mosquitoes use the Combo lure (see the order page).

  Dragonfly II:  How it Works

HOW IT WORKS  Mosquitoes are like bloodhounds.  They have a great sense of smell but very poor eyesight. They can smell you from 100 feet away, but they can’t see you until they are within 30 feet. So you place the trap between you and the mosquitoes, but at least 30 feet from people.  That way, they encounter the trap before they sense you.

1. CO2 is released every 5 seconds simulating the “breath” of a small animal. CO2 is the most powerful attractant for mosquitoes and all other biting flies, including horseflies, midges and noseeums. The Dragonfly II uses small CO2 cylinders that are easy to attach and refill. It is cleaner and more attractive to mosquitoes than propane, and adds no more CO2 to the environment.  So from about 100 feet away, they sense the CO2 and go for the trap.

2. The trap uses an additional attractant, Octenol (or if you choose, the Combo lure with Octenol and Lactic Acid), which is activated by the heat of the thermal lure, and evaporates into the CO2 plume. Octenol and Lactic Acid reinforces the mosquitoes' impression that the are going towards an animal.

3.  When the mosquitoes get closer, they can see the trap (lit when dark), and its large heated section (the large dark area at the top).  Mosquitoes have body heat sensors on the tip of their antennae that can detect an animal or human from 10 to 30 feet away.

4.  Mosquitoes typically circle their prey before landing, so they approach the Dragonfly II thermal lure, and fly around it. The thermal lure produces the infrared image of blood near the surface of the skin and the body temperature of a small animal. As one entomologist (insect scientist) aptly described it, “To a mosquito the Dragonfly looks like a shaved rabbit!”

5.When mosquitoes fly too close or attempt to land on the thermal lure, they are vacuumed into a catch tray by the draw of the silent fan through one of the four capture ports at the top and bottom of the Dragonfly II head.  Within a couple of hours they die of dehydration from the air passing over them and shrink to a tiny size.

Mosquito Traps, Repellents & Machines to Kill Mosquitoes

Tests show the Dragonfly II works better than propane traps, which have a single capture source, for all four major groups of mosquitoes in North America and around the world: salt water, fresh water, snow-melt (rivers), and container breeders (tree holes, tires, etc).  See the test results below.

The Dragonfly II is part of a mosquito defense system.  No mosquito trap will kill all mosquitoes, so we recommend that you use the Mosquito Sentry or Cognito repellent devices as well.  They will keep the mosquitoes that are not captured by the system away from you.  You put them near you.

Mosquito Traps, Repellents & Machines to Kill Mosquitoes

CO2   Why is CO2 better than propane? Propane must be burned to create CO2.  When it does, it contains unburned hydrocarbons which taint the pure CO2.  It also contains small amounts of foreign substances that can clog the ignition valves.  This has been a real problem for some manufacturers of propane traps, particularly the Mosquito Magnet.  (The cordless models we sell, the SV3100 and SV5100 have been reliable and we recommend them for Asian Tiger mosquitoes.) And the propane tanks are heavy and cumbersome.  They weigh more (nearly 40 lbs) than some people can handle, and require a tool to change. The CO2 tanks used by the Dragonfly II are the same ones used by paintball guns.  They are small, light, and easily changed.  A 24 oz. tank weighs about 4 lbs.

Where to get CO2?

We cannot ship anything under pressure such as CO2 or Propane. So you must buy them locally. The CO2 bottle and refills can be purchased at Lowes, some sporting goods stores, and Paintball stores and fields. A full 20 oz. bottle costs about $36.00 at Lowes. You exchange the empty for a full one for around $9.00. We recommend that you get more than one to reduce refill trips. You can order from Lowe's online to make sure it is in stock and pick it up at the store nearest you.

If you do not have a Lowes nearby, look here for a paintball facility near you through PBNation.com.  If you are in the northern part of the country, try Dunhams.  They carry the tanks and refill them.

If you have many units or would like to fill your own, please call us for a solution.

MAKE SURE the fitting is not galvanized and does not have a recessed stem. The stem should be level with the sides, not shorter, or it will not open when attached to the NightWatch. Some tanks, including Pure Energy, have recessed stems.  Do not buy them.  They are sold by Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods.  They will not work.  When you refill, change the O-ring. If you don't, it may leak.

The Dawn/Dusk sensor, the Status light and the Mode selection button. The Catch Tray is above.

There are 8 modes of operation.  You keep pushing the button to select.

The Status light indicates which mode you are in and whether you need to replace the CO2 tank or the lure.

  DRAGONFLY II: Installation and Operation

INSTALLATION  The Dragonfly II is very light and comes in a small carton, 12" x 12" x 27" H.  When assembled, it weighs 12 lbs and is 34" H x 10" diameter at the top and base. It requires minor assembly, which is to screw 3 metal legs into the base and then attach them to the base.  The 32' low voltage power cord should be plugged into a GFI protected outdoor plug.  The manual explains the process.  You can set it on the deck or floor, hang it, or put in it the yard and secure it with the 4 included metal stakes.

WHICH SCENT LURE TO USE
Mosquitoes bite during the day and night   Mosquitoes bite only at dawn and dusk

Use the Nosquito Combo Lure.  It contains Octenol and Lactic Acid.  It is good for daytime biters (Asian Tigers) and many mosquito species. Most of the southern States now have this mosquito.

This lure has 2 sections.  You snap it open, put a string or small rubber band between the 2 sections, and hook it together. Then hang it from the lure post.  Change every 30 days.

Use the Dragonfly II Octenol Lure. This applies to most States in the northern part of the US.  However, the Asian Tiger mosquito is spreading north.

One comes with the trap.  You peel off a sticker that covers the small hole that releases the attractant and hang it on the lure post.  Change every 30 days.

OPERATION  The Dragonfly II automatically senses when Dawn and Dusk occur. You simply push the Mode button to select the mode of operation you want.  There are 8.  If you have light to moderate mosquito activity, we recommend the Smart Mode:  The machine operates for 2 hours at Dawn and 5 hours at Dusk.  This will kill mosquitoes during their most active times very effectively (better than most CO2 traps) without using CO2.  When you go outside, if you still notice mosquitoes, press the button once to go to the Manual Mode.  In this mode the Dragonfly operates at maximum effectiveness with CO2 for 4 hours.  Then it will return to the previous setting.  Nothing more to do until one of the warning lights tells you to replace the CO2 or the Octenol lure as shown in the chart below.

The chart shows what happens in each mode.  For example, if you press the Mode button once, it will be in Mode 1, which operates for 1 hour before Sunset and 2 hours after.  It is off the rest of the time  The status light will blink once in green.  This mode uses CO2 in light volume, Octenol, Heat, and light at night. A 24 oz. tank of CO2 will last 19 days.

PLACEMENT  This is one of the most important considerations.  CO2 traps should be placed at least 30 feet from people, preferably more.  It should be out in the open (visible) between you and the source of the mosquitoes in a shady area. You are trying to attract the mosquitoes to it before they perceive you.  Remember that CO2 can be sensed over 100 feet from the source (you and the trap) and the more people, the more CO2.  If you have more than one source or a long property line bordering on an area that harbors mosquitoes, you may need 2 or more.  Figure one for every 100 feet of perimeter. And if they come from more than one side of the property, you may need more to be really effective.

Once you place them, monitor the catch.  Remember that mosquitoes are more prevalent right after a rain, and then decrease in numbers until the next rain, when another hatch of the same or different species may occur.  If you are not catching many, move the machine to another location and increase the operation time.  CO2 is heavier than air, so do not place it in a depression.  The best gauge is your perception of the number of bites you get after placing the machine.  It will not kill every mosquito, but it should make your outdoor life much more tolerable and continue to reduce the population over time.

The Dragonfly II Mosquito Trap is one part of the Dragonfly system.  The other part is a repellent.  The traps kill the mosquitoes and the repellents keep any that remain away from you.

TROUBLESHOOTING  There is less to go wrong with this trap because it does not use propane.  However, if you have problems with the unit, call us at the number above for assistance.  There is a one year manufacturer's warranty on parts and labor.
