Which
mosquito trap and repellent is best for you?
|
What is the best defense against all biting insects (mosquitoes, gnats, midges, etc.)? Use both mosquito repellents and mosquito traps. Traps attract and capture; repellents keep them away. The traps and repellents featured here are the best we can find. First, choose a repellent from the Repellents topic below for the place you congregate outdoors. Everyone should use mosquito repellents. They are inexpensive and work very well. No maintenance. You turn them on when you need them. |
Then, for all but the smallest yards or light mosquito activity, add mosquito trap(s). The right trap for your yard depends mainly upon two factors: 1. The size of your outdoor area, and 2. Whether you have Midges (also called gnats or no-see-ums) or Asian Tiger mosquitoes. You have them if you get bites during the day. When you are outdoors for extended periods, or away from home, we highly recommend using Mosquito Patches. They are safe, effective and cheap. No oils, smells or mess.

| Midges (No-Seeums) & Asian Tiger Mosquitoes | ||||
Asian Tiger mosquitoes are black and white striped (hence Tiger) that are very aggressive biters. Unlike most other mosquitoes which are mainly present only at dawn and dusk, Asian Tigers are active all night and day. As are midges. So you should operate the trap 24 hours a day. Use the Combo lure. In tests, it attracts many more than the other lures. This also applies to midges, gnats and no-see-ums. |

All yard sizes: Get repellents for the balcony, patio or outdoor area. Use the repellents of your choice. They work against all biting insects, including mosquitoes, gnats and midges. The Mosquito Sentry covers the largest area, around 30' x 30' or 900 Sq. Ft. and up to 15 people. Totally non-toxic. For smaller spaces and less money, see the Cognitos and Conceal Candles, also totally non-toxic. Start with 2 for up to 4 people, and add 1 more for each additional 4 people. Thermacell lanterns or appliances protect an area of about 15 feet in diameter. Good for personal protection and very portable. However they emit Pyrethrin, which is slightly toxic. Next, if you have more than a tiny yard, you should select a trap or traps. Look for your yard size and mosquito type below. |

Tiny Yard (20 feet or less to the border from the area you use). If the edge of your property is 20 feet or less from the outdoor area you use, do not get a mosquito trap. A mosquito trap will attract mosquitoes too close to you. Use only the mosquito repellent devices.

Use mosquito repellent devices only.

Small Yard (20 to 30 feet to the border from the area you use) and indoors. Use the repellents of your choice and get an Intellitrap. Put the mosquito trap at least 15 feet from you. Use the liquid attractant that is designed for the trap. You can also use the Intellitrap indoors. These mosquito traps do not use CO2 so they do not attract from a wide area, up to around 30 feet. They do use lights, so they must be in a place that is visible to the mosquitoes. They will also catch many other bothersome insects. If used indoors, put them in a dark place away from people or pets. |

Larger yard (30 feet or more to the border) with ASIAN TIGER mosquitoes, gnats or midges (bite during the day). Use the repellents of your choice and one or more of these CO2 based traps. Put the trap at least 30 feet away from you toward the source of the mosquitoes. The Dragonfly II is a corded trap that can be operated at different times of the day. We recommend the Smart Mode for most users, in which the trap operates without CO2 for 7 hours per day (you can add CO2 when you are outside with one push of the Mode button if needed), or the Afternoon mode. In Smart Mode, it catches nearly the same number of mosquitoes as some traps using CO2. You have 8 options. 4 metal stakes secure it to the ground. If you need a cordless trap, we recommend either the SV3100 or SV5100. They operate 24 hours a day. The propane tank must be changed every 19-21 days (3100) or 15-18 days (5100). Use the Combo lure which includes lactic acid and octenol. This is much more effective against daytime biting mosquitoes than octenol alone. The MT350 cannot use this lure because its lure holder is too small. |

Larger yard (30 feet or more to the border) with NO ASIAN TIGER mosquitoes (bite mainly at dawn and dusk). Use the repellents of your choice (The one that covers the biggest area is the Mosquito Sentry. For smaller spaces and less money, see the Conceal Candles or Thermacell pages.) and the Dragonfly II or the MT350. Both are corded traps. Both have timers, so the CO2 source lasts much longer. The Dragonfly II has a 8 operating modes for various times and levels of CO2 output. Consequently, you can operate the unit at the times when the mosquitoes are active in your area. The Dragonfly uses small CO2 canisters instead of propane. Easier to replace, much lighter, no flame, no ignition problems. Use the Dragonfly Octenol lure designed for use with the Dragonfly. It requires electricity, so you will have a cord, but it can be easily buried. Four metal stakes secure it to the ground. The MT350 is a corded trap. It is one of few traps that has a timer, so you can set the operation for dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are present. Used this way, a tank of propane can last for months. The MT350 has wheels for easy repositioning. Use the Flowtron Octenol lure. If you need a cordless trap, you can also use the SV3100 or SV5100. They run 24 hours, but require no electricity, so no cord. Use the FineTune Octenol lure or the Combo lure. |

Very large yards Use repellents for your patio or congregating space. If there is more than one, protect each area with repellents. We recommend the Mosquito Sentry and the Cognitos. Next, determine whether you have daytime biters. If so, buy the traps recommended above under Larger Yard with Asian Tigers. Use the Nosquito Combo Lure. If not, follow the suggestions under Larger yard with NO Asian Tigers. You can use either the Nosquito Combo lure or an Octenol lure. Place one mosquito trap every 100 feet on the perimeter of your yard toward the mosquitoes. If the mosquitoes come from more than one side, you will need more traps. If mosquito activity is heavy, you may also need more. We recommend that you first look at multiples of the Dragonfly II, the SV3100 or SV5100 (cordless). If you want a corded trap with propane, the MT350. |

| Mosquito Trap Placement | ||||
Mosquito trap placement is one of the most important considerations. The best mosquito trap poorly placed will catch hardly anything at all. A CO2 mosquito machine should be placed at least 30 feet from where people linger. The mosquito machine should be between you and the source of the mosquitoes in a shady, open area. Preferably, it should be as close to the source as possible and up-wind of the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes fly up-wind to find a meal. You are trying to attract the mosquitoes to it before they perceive you. Remember that CO2 can be sensed around 100 feet from the source (you and the mosquito trap) and the more people, the more CO2. If you have more than one mosquito source or a long property line bordering on an area that harbors mosquitoes, you may need 2 or more. Figure one for every 100 feet of perimeter to successfully trap and kill mosquitoes completely. If they come from both sides of the property, you will need at least 2 mosquito killer machines. |
Once you place them, monitor the catch. Mosquitoes dry up to almost nothing due to the drying wind caused by the fan, so don't expect a huge pile. Remember that mosquitoes are more prevalent right after a rain, and then decrease in numbers until the next rain, when another hatch of the same or different species may occur. If you are not catching many, move the mosquito trap to another location. Even a few feet can make a difference. CO2 is heavier than air, so do not place it in a depression. The best gauge is your perception of the number of bites you get after placing the mosquito killer machine. It will not kill all mosquitoes present, but it should make your outdoor life much more tolerable and continue to reduce the population over time. |
